Анотація

Abstract. The aim of the study was to investigate how reading aloud as a type of reading and reading comprehension as the main goal of reading are related. The pupils participating in the study were 44 twelve-year-old Hungarian learners of English living in Transcarpathia, Ukraine. The study proved that retelling as a measure to test reading comprehension is less valid, because it tests learners’ memory rather than their comprehension. Furthermore, it is a big strain on learners to remember details of a story. Thus, teachers had better use comprehension questions to check how well learners understood texts.
