Violations of rights committed by the communist regime in Transcarpathia (1944–1953)

Abstract. Transcarpathia, as an administrative unit created in 1919 from the Ung, Bereg, Ugocsa and Máramaros counties of the historical Hungary, was part of several states in the first half of the 20th century: in 1919 it was acquired by Czechoslovakia, then between 1938–1939 it became part of Hungary again, then in the autumn of 1944 the Soviet occupation followed, and the annexation to the Soviet Union. The frequent changes of power took place due to the peripheral character of the region, as a result of political decisions of great powers, without consulting the local population who always had to adapt to the political system brought by the new state power. Kárpátalja, a történelmi Magyarország Ung, Bereg, Ugocsa és Máramaros megyéiből 1919-ben létrejövő közigazgatási egység a 20. század első felében több államalakulat részét képezte: 1919-ben Csehszlovákia szerezte meg, majd 1938-1939-ben visszakerült Magyarországhoz, 1944 őszén pedig a szovjet megszállás következett, illetve a Szovjetunió bekebelezte. A gyakori hatalomváltások a régió perifériális jellege okán, nagyhatalmi politikai döntések következtében mentek végbe, az itt élők megkérdezése nélkül, akiknek mindig alkalmazkodni kellett az új államhatalom politikai rendszeréhez.
