Abstract. Jeżeli nasze wnioski są słuszne, to na pytanie zadane w tytule – czy pol. starać się może być bohemizmem? – można dać odpowiedź twierdzącą. Na szereg słów mylnie uważanych za prasłowiańskie zwrócił już uwagę Nikołaj Trubieckoj (1927: 79–80): ros. зáмок, право, духовенство, обыватель, мещане, правомочный < pol. zamek, prawo, duchowieństwo, obywatel, mieszczanie, prawomocny < czes. zámek, právo, duchovenství, obyvatel, měščenín, pravomocný, które z kolei kalkują niem. Schloss, Recht, Geistlichkeit, Bewohner, Bürger, rechtskräftig. Do tej listy uzupełnionej w międzyczasie także przez innych badaczy (por. Thomas 1985) można dodać i polski czasownik starać się wraz z jego odpowiednikami w pozostałych językach słowiańskich.Abstract. In etymological literature, the Polish verb starać się ‘to strive, to do one’s best’ is usually considered as a continuant of the form *starati sę, which allegedly already existed in Proto-Slavic. At the same time, it is overlooked that this verb is completely absent in Old Church Slavonic, it is absent in Middle Bulgarian and Old Serbian. Moreover, стараться in the Russian language has been noted only since the second half of the 17th century. The article suggests that at present this verb has a common Slavic distribution not due to its ProtoSlavic antiquity, but as a result of its migration from one Slavic language to another much later than the disintegration of the Proto-Slavic language.
