Резюме. Американський роман 60–70-х років ХХ століття вирізняється великою складністю. У різноманітних формах виявляються різні тенденції, зокрема й такі, що пов’язані з відходом від реалізму. Проте саме складність найцікавіших романів літератури США засвідчує, окрім іншого, напружений характер творчих пошуків їх талановитих авторів.

Abstract. John Gardner is one of the leading representatives of US literature of the 70 of the 20th century. In his prose works he reveals the well-balanced democratic approach to the artistic depiction ofreal life. His presentation of the all-sidedness and the complexity of reality is true-to-life. The psychological portrait of characters in his prose works is mostly revealed in the dramatic action. Artistic means of verbal presentation are all aimed at the true-to-life presentation of reality. The psychological charge and emotiveness are organically involved in time and space of American realities; the cohesion and interpretation of morality as well as a special wealth oflanguage presentation are the main characteristics of such socio­psychological novels as 'The Sunlight Dialogues", ''Nickel Mountain", "October Light''. Gardner 's artistic word is much-embracing and valid; his phrase is strongly compressed. The specifically important feature of his style is his masterly use of the artistic detail which is meant to accentuate the aesthetico-cognitive potential, the atmosphere and the tonality of action. The inner monologue the description of nation and stream of conscience intensify the cognition of human souls.
