Language maintenance and shift: the example of a Transcarpathian Hungarian community

Abstract

Abstract. Millions of people are surrounded by an environment where multiple languages are spoken on a daily basis. Today’s Transcarpathia is no exception, as several languages are used in the region. The monograph is heavily centred around the life stories of the participants, aiming to show the individual aspects of language maintenance as members of a bilingual community, accompanied by other anthropological tools such as linguistic landscape analysis, and language mapping.Резюме. Мільйони людей живуть у такому середовищі, де щодня розмовляють кількома мовами. Закарпаття не є винятком, оскільки в регіоні використовують кілька мов. У монографії зосереджено увагу на життєвих історіях учасників, показано індивідуальні аспекти збереження мови членами двомовної спільноти, які супроводжуються іншими антропологічними інструментами, такими як аналіз лінгвістичного ландшафту та мовне картування.
